The Sunday Night Surgery with Aled & Aaron
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/surgery/
The sunday night surgery is a radio show on Radio 1 aired at 10 O'clock on a sunday night. First of all, the time chosen to air the show is a very clever one as the BBC has taken the time to identify the shows target audience and reflect this research in the time of broadcast. In this case, the target audience is young, usually working to middle class men and women in full time education or jobs that would see sunday night as a time where they must be at home to prepare for Monday morning, yet still want to do something and turning on the radio is a way to kill time. Having the show on a regular slot every sunday night at 10pm allows listeners to associate a time and place with the show and make it a weekly event drawing in more regulars. The host is happy sounding young man named Aled. His dimena is what sets the show apart and makes it popular as he is very warm and welcoming to people phoning or texting in for help with all manner of problems. The usual setup follows a pattern of Aled bringing in a specialist guest to deal with one particular area of psychological or physical problems, listeners then contact the studio with regard to their own personal problems bringing an interactive and personal element to the show. This is the key element to the show's success as listeners no longer feel like they are just listening, they are interacting with the show and feel more included which is a crucial element to success. Despite the casual appearance, the show does have a very structured layout of the number of time to be spent answering listeners questions and time spent discussing this with the featured specialist.
All in all, the show is a good example of an interactive and audience-focused show that is less music orientated but is still successful.
